At the January meeting of the Tazewell County School Board, Chris Moir was named as chair of the school board for the 2024 calendar year. Donna Whittington was named as vice chair. Both appointments were unanimously supported by the board.
Moir, a lifelong resident of Tazewell County, is a retired teacher. She dedicated 30 years of her life to teaching in both Buchanan and Tazewell Counties. Since 2014, she has served as the western district’s representative on the Tazewell County School Board. This is her first time serving as chair. Moir resides in Cedar Bluff, Virginia with her husband. She has four children and two son-in-laws all of whom were educated in Tazewell County Public Schools.
Moir says, “Being a member of the school board has broadened my knowledge and understanding of the many facets involved in operating a successful school system. Tazewell County has incredible people who dedicate themselves tirelessly to ensure our children receive a well-rounded education, in the safest learning environment that we can provide while preparing them to take on the role of productive citizens after graduation.”
For Moir, it has been fulfilling to be a part of the progress that Tazewell County has made over the past decade. During her tenure on the school board, Tazewell County’s students, schools, teachers, and school board members have been recognized as leaders in Southwest Virginia, Region VII, and the Commonwealth of Virginia.
Moir is looking forward to celebrating Tazewell County’s future progress and successes. She adds that “it is an honor to work alongside fellow board members who choose to work collectively making decisions that are the best for EVERY child in Tazewell County.”
Whittington, who will serve as vice chair, has previously served as both chair and vice-chair on the Tazewell County School Board. She began her 33-year career with Tazewell County Public Schools as a teacher. She taught at both Jewell Ridge Elementary and Richlands Elementary School. In 1991, Whittington took on another role at Tazewell County Public Schools when she became the Title 1 Director and Testing Director for 20 years. Whittington served in both of those positions until she retired in 2012. Whittington has served on numerous committees and represented Tazewell County on the A. Linwood Holton Governor’s School for eight years.
Other school board members include Mrs. Irene Mullins, Mr. Erik Robinson, and Mr. David Woodard The next regularly scheduled meeting of the school board will be held on Monday, February 12, 2024. The closed session will begin at 5 p.m. and the regular session will begin at 6:30 p.m. The meeting will be held in the Student Center at Tazewell County Career and Technical Center.
